At the end of June, 1969, with less than 3 weeks
until my departure for the Cape , I needed to
come up with an idea to pay for part of the trip. I had savings from summer
jobs but not enough for the over $300 (in 1969 dollars) that I needed. Both my
Mom and my Aunt Riss had been writing freelance magazine articles; I realized
that my Apollo 11 coverage as a teenage journalist might provide a unique
perspective. I borrowed my Mom’s Writer’s Digest and went to work to find
magazines that might be interested. I sent off query letter to Highlights for
Children, Boys Life, Senior Science and the American Junior Red Cross News.
